This is a common question by the newbie in lure fishing. The obvious difference is the kind of fishes that they mimic. Fresh water ones will have a more natural, dull colored look, while salty ones will have reflective and strongly coloured look. The other important difference is the hooks. Salty ones have stronger and anti corrosion hooks made of steel as compared to the freshwater ones that comes stocked with chrome plated iron.

However, they can be used interchangably with good results. Do be daring to experiment. There will be some lures that are good for both kinds of fishing. But take note to do a more careful cleaning job with the freshy ones after giving them a saltwater bath.
