Reel Review - Revo SX

This is a relatively new low profile reel from Abu Garcia, Swedish maker of fine bait casters.  My first experience with it found my lure shooting out quite a good distance with a light swing. However, it need some getting use to before I can overcome problems of line entanglement.  From the box, it is packed with innovative features like Duragear oversized brass main gear for fast cranking and Carbon matrix smooth drag. Built with aluminium components, it is light weight but felt sturdy in the hand.  With its linear magnetic braking system, one can fine tune the casting to a variety of conditions. Overall, I find the reel quite a joy to use, although casting a light lure less than 7g would still be challenging.

Rod review - Shakespeare Contender

.

sp.JPG

.

The Shakespeare Contender fishing rod has been around the Asia market for many years and there were many good reviews on this rod for its durability as well as possessing good fish-fighting strength. This rod comes in Spinning as well as Bait-casting model, and is very popular amongst new anglers as the price is really value for money. It costs around 50bucks (S$) for a 6-feet rod. Availability of other sizes rod can be found ranging from 5-feet to 8-feet as well.

.
The rod is built with gold colored guides giving a very nice touch to the rod. The rod manufacturer also included some stylish wrapping on the rod for aesthetics. It used red, black and gold thread for the medium action rods and blue, black and gold thread for Heavy action ones. Another commendable review of this rod is the inclusion of Fuji Reel seat, giving a better and more secured feeling for the anglers during the fight with the fish. It comes with full cork handle as well.

.
Although this is a luring rod, I find the blank of this rod a bit stiff even for its medium action ones. However, the sensitivity of the rod is still pretty good. The down side to this rod is that casting of small lures might not be appropriate. However, for casting of medium-large lures such as 70-90mm minnows, it is the perfect rod for the job.

.
Personally, I own 2 Bait-casting Shakespeare contender with 10-20lb as well as the 15lb-30lbs rating and both rod has never disappoint me. During my light offshore trip, I will definitely bring along my 6-feet Heavy action rod and I can say that it really performed well beyond my expectation. Surprisingly for this average pricing rod, dealing those 1-5kg species is really an easy task for my 6-feet Shakespeare.

Types of fishing lures

.
Man is indeed creative in making things that attract fishes over the ages. From the simple invention of a shiny metallic spoon, lures now are as varied as ever in terms of shape and designs. The modern lurer is spoilt for many choices in the types of lures available to make that fishing trip a success.
.
The simpliest of them all should be the spoon. With just a piece of shiny metal with a hole for the hooks, and another to tie to the mainline. They are called spoons as they do sometimes resemble a dinner spoon and are usually thin and flashy. It is normally fished on the water surface, skipping along like a wounded bait fishes. Fishes known to fall for these are top surface fishes like Queenies and mid water pelagics.
.
A variation of the spoon would be the Jig. Jigs come in many sizes and weight. The heavy ones are to target big monster fishes in the deep. They are designed to be long and thin, in order to slice through the water quickly into the deep. The weight is so that they could reached the desired depth quickly. The way to work these Jigs is known as Jigging. It is an action of bouncing the jigs up and down vertically in the water column to make the metal pieces flick and twitch to attract attention. It is usually tied with a separate single hook with a strong piece of string known as Kelvar.
.
The mainstay of lures are those known as Plugs. Plug is the old term for a wooden piece that is shaped like a minnow and swims with a wobble to imitate a wounded fish. Other terms for these are Crankbaits. The action is to have the lurer cast it out and through the reeling in action, makes the lure swim realistically. Lures in this category varies from the surface topwater plugs, to deep divers with long lips.
.
A extension of lures are the squid jigs that are used for squidding, or egging. Squidding is a very popular sport in japan, and it is no wonder that many squid jigs are manufactured there. There are prawn like imitations, with a set of ultra sharp umbrella hooks at the ends.
.
Another category of lures is flies. These lures are made to look like insects. Many fishes feed on insects in their natural environment and therefore, flies can be very effective indeed. However, flies are usually fished with a fly fishing rod. But it is possible to use a spinning rod to attach a small lead with a short leader linking to a fly. This type of fishing is known as fly spinning.
.
The last important category which is quite a recent invention is that of the soft plastics. With the advances of material science, plastics now come looking very realistic, and even smell right. In this category, there are many variations as well. Some are wormlike, some are imitation of food sources like prawns, crikets, lizards, to name a few. Definitely a good alternative for lure fishing.

.
These squid jigs are quite popular and some people swear by it. I have seen folks catching squid after squid on this simple looking squid jig. Compared to the more elaborate models from Yozuri, these are simplier looking in design. But nevertheless, it works well. For squidding, the guide is to use the orange ones in the day, and the pink ones at night.

Lure Review - Yozuri Shrimp Hunter

.
shrimphunter.jpg
.
The Shrimp Hunter is a famous series from Yozuri that truely catches squid, in particular, the green eyes type that is bountiful in the Sibu Island Kelongs in Malaysia. Made with good luminescent material, the Shrimp Hunter comes in various sizes from 2.5 to 4.0, designed to weigh forward for anti snagging and exhibits true to life prawning movement with feathery legs to entice surrounding squids to take it. Armed with ultra sharp umbrella hooks, any squid latching its arms around this will be a sure goner. The effectiveness had been proven many times over. Squids just find it irresistable.
.

Quick switch technique for lure fishing

.
This technique is not really skill based, but more of being ready when the opportunity presents itself when one is doing lure fishing. The trick is to setup 3 rods, each with a different kind of lure. A suggestion is a topwater lure, a crankbait, and a deep diver. This way, at the merest sight of a water splash or sighting of a fish passing by, the lurer could immediately select the best choice of lures for the fish at hand and cast it out to the strike zone. If one is accurate enough, more often than not, a fish would immediately strike at a prey suddenly landing in front of them before they get too cautious. Of cos this technique is not possible to do it on board a moving boat, or when one is constantly on the move, scanning the terrain for fishing spots. This is more suited for a fixed luring position, with the fishing rods all close at hand.

Lure review - Yozuri L-Minnow
.

.
The Yozuri L-Minnow is an all time favourite of many lurers. With its rather stubby size at 66mm, it attracts all sorts of fishes, big and small. The construction quality is classic Yozuri, and is able to take a good beating. The swimming is a nice wiggle that fishes would find irresistable. I find this an effective search lure, for general purpose fishing for both salt and fresh water. Highly recommended and should be part of every lurer’s toolkit.

This is one lure that you need to see it in action to be sold on its effectiveness. It has a very lifelike effect of a baitfish frantic movement to dash for cover. Due to its slim profile. it cuts into the water slicing it smoothly for fast swimming darting action. With its finely crafted holographic body, it gives an enticing visual cue to whet the appetite of any hungry fishes. Using the long bib, it can go into a depth of 150 cm depending on how you work it. This is a fresh water lure, but I use it for my salt water fishing as well. I have had gar fishes chomping on it thinking that it is some runaway food.

Reel Review - ABU 4500CS Pro Rocket

.
Reel Review - ABU 4500CS Pro Rocket
ABU Gracia 4500CS

.
Abu Garcia, a well-known Sweden fishing reel manufacturer, has been making quality bait-casters for many generations. I personally have used a few Abu reel and all the reels which I have owned had never disappoint. Abu 10000 and Abu TEN are reels which I had used during my surf casting days. They had landed many big fish with without any problems. Few months back, I bought an Abu Pro-rocket 4500CS which I have been using for luring. Although it is a bit on heavier side compare to other Japanese bait-casters, the feel is really good and solid and I loved its narrow spool design. Casting it with 12-18grams lure is ideal for this reel, and in my opinion, casting anything smaller than 10grams is better with a smaller BC reel. In order to achieve good casting distance, I paired it with my 6-feet bait-casting rod. Pro-rocket 4500CS can really cast a good distance. Most importantly, do make sure the magnetic brakes are set properly before casting to prevent backlash. Other than using this reel for luring, I have used it for light offshore trip as well. I was pretty amazed that it was able to help me landed a 10lbs Stingray effortlessly. Overall, Abu is still one of my preferred brand. I’m pretty satisfied with my made in Sweden ABU Pro-rocket 4500CS .

    Rod review - Shimano Jigwrex
    Shimano Jigwrex

    .
Shimano has been making many wonderful and excellent rods in their line up and this particular rod, Jigwrex is also one of the popular models being marketed in Asia. Being an Indonesia made Shimano Jigging rod, it does not give the end user the inferior feeling or quality compared to the other Japanese-made rod. Seriously, it has been well-proven by many offshore anglers of its capabilities to land big fish regardless of its Spinning model or Overhead models.

    .

This Greenish-purple colored Jigwrex is built with Super Light & Powerful Carbon Composite blank and is designed with a progressive dual stage action which allows the jiggers to impart jig action easily on their heavy metal jig and yet boasting great fish turning power without angler’s fatigue.

    .
Besides using Fuji reel seat on the Jigwrex, Shimano also built the rod with quality guides. The guides on the all the Jigwrex models are Fuji Silicon Carbides, with Fuji CMNST tips, which are designed to minimize line damage as well as to effectively provide the optimum performance of the rod. Along with eight coats of Chameleon finish and black bindings with gold and silver trim, these are both stylish and functional looking rods. Nevertheless, it’s a class of its own.

    .
Other than using it as a jigging rod, it can also be used as a bottom fishing rod as well. Overall being a satisfied end user who is currently owning this rod, I can proudly say that Shimano Jigwrex really worth the money spend for my kind of fishing and I’m quite sure that you wouldn’t be disappointed with it.

    PB on lure

    .
If you are a freshwater sport fishing enthusiast, you cannot go without these lures. These are proven PB (Peacock Bass) attractors and without doubt, many CRs (catch report) are seen with PB succumbing to the popular Humbugs or Middive. The Humbug is more of a shallow runner, while the middive can go a little deeper. Using a middive, one should be careful if fishing over rocky areas. The quality of the lure is more plasticky than the better (and more expensive) brands. But heck, it works. There is a wide color range, most of which are pretty dull to match freshwater bait fishes. The brighter ones seem to work better in catching the attention of game fishes especially when the water is not that clear.

    Rod review - Shimano Bassterra

    bassterra.jpg

    .

Bassterra is a well-known fishing rod by Shimano and has been greatly used for luring freshwater and saltwater species. Be it Baitcast or Spinning rod model, this rod is light and powerful. The Bassterra exhibits the characteristics of what an ideal bass rod should be like.

    .
Cross Carbon tape on the rod increases strength during the different angles of flex. Designed with high line poundage capabilities and ergonomic full-cork grip, be assured of a better grip during rugged fish fights. In addition, a double wrapped SiC guide allows silky smooth travel of the line through the guides. The Bassterra also comes with a Fuji Reel Seat for a firm attachment of the reel.
    .
As it is build as a bass rod, the only drawback is the 1st top guide need a bigger swivel to prevent it from going into your guide. Nevertheless, it is an excellent rod to own.

I was introduced to this lure by a fishing fanatic friend, that had great success with this lure. I have seen him catch all sorts of varied catches with it, from Threadfin, Wolf herrings to Trevally. This is a relativity small lure, but it packs a punch. I was wondering why, until when I dissected one of the catches and found one of the bait fishes that the fish ate to be exactly alike to this lure. No wonder it is so effective. This lure is considered a light lure, and is mainly a shallow running, but can be fished deep if you put a weight to it. I would always have a few in my lure box on every fishing trip.

    Saltwater Lures vs Freshwater Lures

    .
This is a common question by the newbie in lure fishing. The obvious difference is the kind of fishes that they mimic. Fresh water ones will have a more natural, dull colored look, while salty ones will have reflective and strongly coloured look. The other important difference is the hooks. Salty ones have stronger and anti corrosion hooks made of steel as compared to the freshwater ones that comes stocked with chrome plated iron.
    .
However, they can be used interchangably with good results. Do be daring to experiment. There will be some lures that are good for both kinds of fishing. But take note to do a more careful cleaning job with the freshy ones after giving them a saltwater bath.

    Fishing spots in Singapore

    .

    .
Singapore fishing spots that are publicly known are shown on the map. Some places are accessible, while some requires some form of transportation. Some places are comfortable, clean and well lighted. Some areas are mosquito, sandflies infested, and need some roughing out.
    .
Freshwater fishing can be done at the reservoirs, although only luring is allowed. However, it is a common sight to see people still fishing with live baits and organic baits.
    .
Generally, the water in the east area is cleaner and better quality. Water in the north tends to be dirty due to the rubbish from both countries facing the strait. Water in the west is quite polluted due to the industries and factories around the area. Furthermore, large area in the west are out of bounds.
    .
Fishing is no longer like yesteryears, but there are the ocassional surprises. The best known public fishing ground is probably Bedok Jetty, where scores of anglers convene every weekends to jig for tambans and aim for the biggies.
    .
For those venturing “overseas”, there is Pulau Ubin, and the smaller islands like St John, Kusu, sister islands for the visiting. However, it is no longer cheap to pay a visit to the islands, except for Pulau Ubin. Semakau is opened for lurers at a pre-determined timing, but the trip is guided and controlled and only luring and catch and release is allowed.

    Barracuda on lure
    .

These are my regular workhorses when comes to luring and I have had many good success with them, catching all sorts of fishes including ribbons, barracudas, spanish mackerals and others. Well constructed, it is solidly built with strong steel trebles that are ultra sharp. The body is coated with reflective surface that shines brightly under dim conditons. In fact, it is a good choice when luring at night and fishes find it irresistable from the good swimming action and glimmering flashes. Internally, it contains ball bearings to attract fishes from its noisy movements. Few times, I have fooled humans thinking that it was a fish swimming in the water. Castability is ok in its weight class. The old model has a smooth shiny surface, but the newer ones have a serrated prismatic look for maximum reflectiveness. Both models I found to work well. And it is definitely affordable as compared to more exotic lures in the market.

    .
This swedish reel is solidy built of stainless steel with brass components, featuring reduced use of plastic, bevelled edge, lazer etched logo and a superior refined feel to it. Internally, it is packed solid with carbon matrix drag system, centrifugal brakes and corrision resistant bearings. The record is a reworked model of the original record that was created in 1939, the first reel made by Abu. With a light weight vented spool, the abu is a joy to hold as well as asthetically pleasing to the eye.
    .
The reel is very smooth when used, and is one of the longest casting reel beating all the C3 models. Over the years, it had never disappointed, packing a punch even under the most demanding situation. Maintenance is quite simple, only requiring a thorough lubing once a while. This reel is highly recommended for luring.

The Black Rose from Lemax is one of the 3 rods in the “musketeers series. The other two being the Red sword and Blue Mountain. Technically it is a fresh water rod, but it is usable in all sorts of fishing conditions. It is equipped with Fuji guides, and rather artistically crafted, with nice silver black emblems of black rose design on the graphite shaft. It is a joy to fish with this rod as it is light and responsive, and has a strong backbone.

    Using a baitcaster, multiplier

    .

Baitcasters are almost a must learn tool for the luring hobbyist. The reason being that a baitcaster is able to cast more accurately, has less of a line twisting problem and provide more power due to the direct torque when you turn the reel. Not to mention, in a way it is more stylo and fashionable.

    .

But for most people new to this tackle, it won’t be long before you would encounter the dreaded “birdnest”. In local terms, it is also known as “char bee hoon” (fried noodle). Getting a tangled mess of lines, when you should be fishing will most certainly spoil your day. Therefore, some lessons are needed for you to be in control of how to baitcast with minimal problems of getting your lines in a mess.

    .

As for the baitcasters, there are many varieties in the market. Most of them works the same way. The more expensive ones are usually able to minimise the backlash better. Some will throw out a lighter lure better. But with poor technique, even the best baitcasting reel would not forgive a poor cast that would result in wasted time to unravel the tangles.

    .

First thing first, is to set up/prime your rig. With the lure/weight or whatever you are casting, unlock the spool release lever. This is normally a downward click. Hold the rod horizontally pointing outwards from you, and see if the line will slowly descend without any resistance. If not, release more of the braking knob. (at the centre of the side of the reel). Release it till the line will slowly descend with a slight tap. If you want to be conservative (for fear of backlash, from that point, tighten it back just a little).

    .

You will need to practise, that’s for sure. Find an isolated area, and make your first cast. But do not cast too strongly. Just a medium lob will do. Before throwing out, unlock the spool release lever, use the thumb to hold the lines, and with an overhead action from the back to the front, do a lob. Once the weight/lure is in front of you around 45-60 degrees, release the thumb from the spool and let the weight pulls out the line.

    .

Now, this part is the most important. Before the weight/lure hits the water/land, be ready to thumb the reel again. The reason is that if you don’t, the spool will continue spinning, and that’s where the bird nest/horrible tangle will form. Therefore, you will need to stop the reel once it hits any resistance.

    .

Practise this a few times, and you will get used to it. Soon, it will be second nature to you, and you would be doing it without much thinking.

    Quick change technique for lures

    .

    img_1072.JPG

    .

One of the important things to learn in lure fishing is how to be able to change your lures quickly. If you had used the normal way of tying the leader straight to the lure, changing lures can be down right difficult. It is also something that you wouldn’t want to do too often, with the hassle of tying and retying.

    .

Although good effect can be had if the leader goes to the lure via a Rapala Knot, the trade off of doing something else is better. The Rapala Knot is indeed good for freedom of lure action, but when time to change the lure, you would need to cut and retie again. That something else is to tie the leader to a small swivel, and then to a rounded snap.

    .

    .

Be careful in choosing the snaps as those that are not rounded, but have an angled edge to it will not work well. The kink in the snap will hinder the lure action. That is something that we don’t want. Therefore, go for the better quality snaps with the rounded edge.

    .

Also try to use the smallest possible swivel and snap pair. When using smaller lures, downsize it according. The whole setup has to be balanced for the lure to work properly.
    .

With this technique, you could do a lure change every few cast rather effortlessly, improving your fishing session which fishes are finicky and may only go for a certain lure. Therefore, changing lures and trying everything in your tacklebox may just save the day.

    .

    Fishing Lures color selection

    .

It’s very clear that there are more colors of lures that you can ever buy, and hence at some point in time, you will need to ask what color lures you would actually need? There are no hard and fast rules, but the idea about that not all lure colors will work is a simple scientific one.

    .

In the water, colors are absorbed and filtered out the deeper the object goes. In the order of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. If you remember your basic science, this has to do with the wavelength of the color. Colors are being absorbed as they passes through the water molecules. The longer ones are absorbed first ie red, orange etc…Therefore, at a certain depth, lures of this color will appear black! to fishes. This is quite ok, as fishes are not particularly color loving creatures. As long as the object looked like a good meal, it will still go for it. However, if the background is equally “black” in color, the problem would be that the fishes couldn’t see it in the first place.

    .

Therefore logically put, lures colors are of no consquences, if they are floating ones, and meant to be fished near the surface. What will make a difference then is how they look and feel like the normal meals that the big critters around the area are used to.

    .

But things are different if you fish the deeper depths of the water, eg trolling. That’s where the color of the lure is important to ensure the the fishes actually sees it in the first place.

    .

The visibility of a lure is best when fishing on a bright clear day, and during noon time. That’s when the clarity of the water is at its best. However, most of our fishing aren’t done during periods like this, therefore the visibility factor will drop many factors due to various considerations like the time of the day, and the clarity of the water.

    .

Clarity of the water also depends on the amount of floating particles in the sea. That means when fishing near the shore, the water is naturally not as clear as fishing in the deep ocean. And depending on the particles that are present, some influences as to what colors are absorbed more than others may play a part. In some places like lakes or reservoir, green and blue are in fact absorbed by natural organic acid more than the others, that it reverse the notion that blue and green are the colors that penetrate most into the water.

    .

Knowing the above, what then should be a good guide to lure color selection?

    .

    1. When fishing at night, use a dark lure color. While the novice may think that this is quite illogical, the reason for this being that dark colors throws the best shadow. At night, fishes looking up actually see a brighter sky compared to the surrounding. Hence, a dark lure will stand out as a solid looking object catching their attention.

    .

    2. Red, yellow, silver and metallic colors are most intense during bright sunny days in clear shallow water. Metallic lures have the added benefit of creating flashes at some depth, and is a good choice during such times.

    .

    3. When trolling deep, colors don’t matter. What matters are shape, size, sound and action of the lure.

    .

    4. In tea like water, use red and yellow and bright fluorescent colors. These offers the most visibility.

    .

    5. When fishing topwater lures, colors aren’t very critical.

    .

    6. In winter when there are lots of participates in the water due to algae and silt, use plenty of yellow, green and blue. Red and oranges are first to go.

    .

    7. When fishing at night near a light source and fishing shallow, go for reflective or fluorescent lures.

    Lure fishing setup guide

    .
This would be the question on your mind about what equipment you would need to get, once you are set on luring as a hobby. The novice would quickly learn that lure fishing requires a certain specialized set of equipment, as opposed to someone who is doing bottom fishing or going out on a boat trip.
    .

The main difference is this: Lurers (people who lure) need to repeat the action of casting many times in a fishing session. This calls for a light weight setup, and a certain finnese in the fishing equipment. Too heavy a reel and rod, the lurer quickly tires out, and would not be able to enjoy the session. Also, too heavy a reel and rod dampens the sensitivity that one needs to feel the taps and nudges from a curious fish. Also, the lurer needs to be on the go all the time, to search out the places where the fishes are holding, rather than attracting them by scent to the locality.

    .
The main equipment to decide on of course, is the rod and reel, the workhorses of any fisherman.

    .
    Rod

    .
Choose a light rod of lengths between 6-7 ft, the length depending on how comfortable you are. 6′6″ seems to be a good general purpose length. The longer it is, the farther you can cast, all things being equal. Choose also rods that are light, and strong in their class. The action, speed of which it springs back to the original rest state, needs to be fast. This is important to be able to set the hooks quickly the moment a fish hits the lure. The slower the action, the chances of missing the hookup is greater.

    .
    Reel

    .
Most lurers prefer a baitcaster, for good reasons. Using a spinning reel, the lines could get a very bad twisting due to all the casting. Also, the mechanical arm of the bail may take quite a bit of wear and tear. Baitcaster reels minimise all the above, and generally has a stronger reeling power, due to the direct turning force on the reel itself. Spinning reels recover the lines at an angle, and hence are weaker in recovering lines.

    .
For rods, also go for one with a quality guides. The number of times the lines cut in and out from the reel, will surely give the guides a good beating.

    .
As for the size of the reel, most people would prefer a light weight medium size reel. Too small, the diameter of the lines on the spool forms a smaller loop, and hence cause more twisting. For spinning reel, a mid-size 1500-2500 is preferred. For baitcasting, a size of 100-200 is preferred. (Sizes are in reference to shimano products). As a thumb of rule, the reel needs to be spool with a minimum of 100m of lines.

    .
    Lines

    .
Most lurers go for braided lines, and in the range of 8-12 lbs. For casting lighter lures, some would even go to 4-6 lbs to reduce the wind resistance. Going 4 and below, definitely requires a good fighting skill to successfully land the fish.

    .
    Leader

    .
A transparent mono leader of about 3 ft is needed to tie from the mainline to the lure. The reason being, for protection against abrasion (rubbing against rocks and structures), and also for shock and impact absorption when the fish gives its initial thumping on the lure. Transparent mono leader also are less visible than mainline, and will spook fishes less. For lure fishing, a leader from 8-12 lbs is typical. Some even go for expensive flourocarbon lines, supposedly invisible in the water. Generally, the thinner the line, the better. During night luring in low line conditions, thicker lines of up to 20 lbs can be used. However, take care that the thickness of the line does not hamper the lure movement.

    .
Swivels and Snaps for quick change of lures

    .
An important and convenient trick is to learn to put a swivel and use a snap to connect to a lure. While there are those that prefers to tie the leader direct to the lure using knots like the Rapala knot, these quick change mechanism are quite worth the trade off. The important thing is to not use an oversize swivel and snap for the intended lures. For small lures, swivel and snap should be downsized accordingly. Luring requires changing of lures due to the fishing condition, this would help to accomplish that.

    .
    Casting small lures

    .
Try casting a small lure into the wind, and you would quickly know the main challenge in doing that. Due to the light weight, it is not easy to cast small lures far. To achieve this, the reel and lines need to be lighter than usual. Most people would prefer to use a small spinning setup for casting light lures. There are specialised baitcasters for that, but they are usually priced rather expensively.

    .

    Lure fishing tips

    .

Just a simple collection of luring tips and strategies. If you have any, please contribute :)

    .

    1. Try everything, from grubs, worms, to spinners and spoons. Don’t just keep to crank baits and plugs (as some would call a plastic wooden fish like lure). Try progressively from surface lures to deep diving lures. Search the water column.

    .

    2. Search the water. Don’t stay at a single spot for too long. Try around at all sorts of cover, beside weeds, under structure, at the water opening, fallen tree etc. Fishes don’t usually hang out in the wide open, without any sort of shelter and cover.

    .

    3. Observe your surrounding. Be attentive to any splashes and surface activity. Seeing school of bait fishes is a good sign that the biggies are lurking around. Look for birds. They are fishing too.

    .

    4. Be mindful of the amount of light and the water clarity that you are fishing in. Bright day calls for red, orange, yellow and natural tone lures as these stands out clearly in bright day. If you are fishing deep, go for yellow to blue colors as these colors retain more visibility the deeper you go. Stained water calls for brighter lures and dark murky waters calls for bright flourescent lures. For night luring, use a dark lure. I would also go for silvery reflective lures at night if there are some light sources around.

    .

    5. Think like a fish. Impart that action positively into the lures that you are “puppeting”. Never just cast and retreive mechanically. Fishes can just detect the unnatural movements from a discouraged lurer.

    .

    6. Adjust your retrieving speed. Some lures works best within range of speed that you are pulling. Give allowances for water current and other wind resistance. Observe how your lure is swimming at various speeds.

    .

    7. When the fishing is tough, downgrade to a smaller lure. Smaller lures can catch a big fish, but big lures cannot catch a small fish.

    .

    8. Impart a little scent to your lure. Sometimes, due to external smell, fishes are turned off from attacking your lure. Scent helps to cover unnatural smell to entice the fishes to bite.

    Luring and lure fishing tutorial

    .

Welcome to this short luring guide that will give you luring lessons on how to start off lure fishing. Hope that this tutorial is useful to you and please do drop me a comment if you will :). Enjoy.

    .

    What is lure fishing?
    .
Lure fishing is simply a method of fishing by using a bait-fish look-alike at the end of a fishing line to fool fishes into attacking it. To do so, some movement has to be imparted into the plastic fishes to make it come alive and look as if it is a wounded fish trying to flee away to cover. On the body of the swimiing lure, there are single, double or treble hooks to do the catching of the attacking fish. Other than plastic lures, flies, spoon and soft plastic are also considered lures. Flies are of a special category, where the bait is fashioned to resemble an insect. They are designed to either float or sink. Since there is no smell for lures, aggressive fishes that attack by sight are attracted by this kind of fishing. Some are attracted by the color of the lure, some by the look, some by the flashes and some by the speed. Usually it is a combination of these few factors.
    .
Luring is fairly popular fishing method lately. Lurers today are spoilt for many choices of lures, some pretty expensive if I may say. Some committed lure anglers think nothing of spurgling large amount of money to get lures to target their favourite catches. Once a lure can catch a fish, most anglers would stock up quite a few pieces of the same lure in case they lose it.
    .
What are the advantages of luring?
    .
    Advantages of luring are many.
    1. Obviously, it is clean. No need to mess with dirty baits.
    2. It is also portable, easy to bring around.
    3. It is challenging and a very active form of fishing, as opposed to waiting for that bite to happen.
    4. And it is definitley very challenging to be catching a fish on lure.
    .
Disadvantages of luring is that it is more expensive. Not to mention that one would lose lures every once a while due to snags, broken leader and toothy critters.
    .
What kind of rod and reel setup do we need for luring?
    .
To lure, lurers need to choose to use a light weight setup. Considering that the action of casting and retrieving (act of luring) is repeated many many times in a session, the gear cannot be too heavy. Luring also gives the fisherman a good workout. Sometimes when the going gets tough (no bites), it can be quite a tiring affair.
    .
Some luring rods could be (suggested list only)
    1. Berkley cherry wood
    2. Ryobi Regno Plus
    3. Shimano Bass one
    4. Abu ultra cast
    5. Shimano Scimitar
    6. Shimano Bassrise
    7. Shimano Bassterra
    8. Shimano Bass one
    9. Berkley lightning rod
    .
Some reels for luring: (suggested list)
    1. Abu Record
    2. Abu 2500C
    3. Abu Revo STX/SX
    4. Shimano antares ar
    5. Daiwa aplhas
    6. Daiwa Freams Kix
    7. Daiwa Caldia Kix
    8. Abu garcia cardinal
    9. Ryobi applause
    10. Ryobi Zauber
    11. Shimano Sienna
    12. Calcutta
    13. Daiwa Certate
    .
Luring reels are typically of the following specs
    1. capacity for 100m of line
    2. Spinning size 1000-2000
    3. Baitcasting size of 100-200
    4. Line strength 6-10lbs
    .
Luring rods are typically of the following specs
    1. Fast-Extra fast action
    2. 6-7 ft
    3. 6-15lbs
    4. Lure weight 7-25g.
    .
Most lurers would go for a bait casting set, as these minimise the line twisting from all the casting. A spinning set is possible, but expect your lines to be abused after the fishing. Reels have to be small and lightweight, and the rod would need to be at around 6-7′ for good distance. Usually lurers would choose a fast action rod for quick setting when their lures are being attacked. Fishes would know very quickly that the “wounded” fish is fake hence quick action to set the hook is necessary.
    .
What are the kinds of lures that I should get?
    .
Lure comes in many types, to target fishes at different level of the water column. There are
    1. Popper - jerk to create splashes on the water surface
    2. Pencil - surface darting action
    3. Shallow crank bait - fat floating lure to 1.5m.
    4. Shallow minnow - long floating lure, diving to 1.5m
    5. Suspending minnow - for crank and stop action.
    6. Deep diver minnow - floating lure to 3m.
    7. Deep diver crankbait - fat floating lure to 3m.
    8. Sinking lures - can go any depth, give sufficient time to sink.
    9. Jigs, spinners, spoons - spinners for freshwater
    10. Rubber, Soft plastics
    .
Do colors play an important part in luring?
    .
For luring to work, visibility of the lure is an important consideration. Also, use as fine a leader as you possibly can. Too thick a leader, the lure action would not be good, and fishes can see. Lurers usually don’t use wire leaders.
    .
Visibility in the water is affected by many factors
    1. Water depth,
    2. Suspension particles in the water
    3. Strength of the sunlight
    .
    As a rule of thumb:
    1. At night, use a dark color lure. In the night, fish sees by the silhouette of the fish from the bottom.
    2. In water with lots of organic particles (like a lake), go for yellow-green lures.
    3. Bright day, use red, orange, silver, yellow.
    4. Heavily stained waters, use flourescent hues.
    .
To improve the chances of catching the fish, some lurers add a dash of scent onto the lure. The difference of the fish holding on to it a sec more may make the differnce whether it would throw out the hooks quickly.
    .
Does size of the lure plays an important part?
    .
Yes. Like baiting, using a bigger lure only attracts bigger fish mostly. A smaller lure would be attacked more often by fishes that are bigger than it is. So, it is prudent to have an assortment of sizes for days when the big lures are not catching anything. Switching to a smaller lure may increase your chances.

    How do I lure?
    .
To lure, cast out the lure and reel it in. You got just simply wind the line in (the lure action would do the trick). Keep the rod tip as near to the water as you can, so as to lower the angle of the line to the water surface. This way, the lure will run better (more action). You could give it a little twitch every few cranks of the reel handle. Or you could do the reel and pause combo. Vary the speed. Sometimes, a slow speed would work, sometimes, a faster one is more effective. Depending on the water current, you need to find the speed to makes your lure runs the best.
    .
Be careful of using too light a lure. In a windy condition, it is easy to get bird nest if the wind is blowing against you. For lures too light for your setup, add a bean weight or a splitshot.
    .
To get extra distance, you can also use a running sinker into front of your swivel. But using a sinking setup (sinking lure, sinker), never stop your retrieval halfway and go do something else. If the terrain is rocky, this is a sure way to lose the lure.
    .
If a fish strike at a lure, you must immediately pull back your rod to drive the trebles into the fish mouth. That is the reason why lurers prefer using braided lines and using a fast action rod. If the fish is firmly connected, you will be able to feel an extra load pulling the opposite way. If it is a big fish, your line may even spool out of the reel. Keep the line taut in case the fish decides to go aerobatic.
    .
Do I have to practise catch and release only?
    .
Catch and release (CNR) is a sensitive topic. And most lurers are proponents of CNR. Some anglers frown upon those that keep their catches or even those that uses bait for fishing. To me, it is all about the eco balance in nature. If the specie of fish is endangered or fast depeleting, it is good to release those catches back into the water. However, if the catch is considered a pest in the local waters, it may even be against the law to release it. Some times, keeping your catches is helping the enviroment instead. eg. alien introduced species like snake heads etc. These fishes are a threat to the eco-system as they can wipe out the local fish stock due to their aggressive and adaptable nature.
